Hens that regenerate the land

Ward and Rosie always kept animals, and animals are still how this farm feeds itself. Sheep graze, hens work the pasture, and between them they put back what a bag of fertilizer would otherwise have to.

Keeping animals makes the ecosystem more complete. The hens help fertilize the land, eat the pests, and let us provide premium eggs to our region.

Our eggs go to grocers across northern California, close to the farm.

Animals are how this farm feeds itself. What the sheep and the hens leave behind goes back into the ground, and it is a good part of why this land keeps getting better.

Sheep graze the cover crop

They work through the cover crop, keeping it in check, and leave manure behind them as they go.

Hens work the ground

They scratch through the cover, eat insects and larvae, and spread what they leave across the paddock as they go.

The soil builds

Nitrogen goes into the soil where roots can reach it, pest pressure eases, and we buy far less out of a bag. It is the same principle we farm the whole place on.

Pasture-raised

Out on pasture, and moved regularly

Pasture-raised means just what it sounds like. Our hens live outdoors. They spend their days scratching through the cover, eating insects and seeds, and go back in only to roost and lay. What is underfoot changes through the year — green in the spring, dry cover later on. Roughly a third of what they eat they find themselves; the rest is organic feed.

The coops are on wheels. When a stretch has been worked over, the hens move on to the next one and what they leave gets weeks to recover before it sees them again. Ten coops on wheels, following the flock.

The part nobody prints on the carton

What each label on the carton means

Every carton in the case says something reassuring. Not all of those words mean the same thing, and only some of them are defined at all.

There is no federal standard for “pasture-raised.” It is a term anyone can use, so rather than ask you to take the word on trust, we would rather tell you how often the coops move and who comes to check our work.
